Vannamei Exports Equal Monodon Exports, Almost

For the past two decades, shrimp farmers in Vietnam exported mostly giant tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon).  In the third quarter of 2013, however, white shrimp (P. vannamei) exports almost equaled those of tiger shrimp, and by the end of 2013, white shrimp exports will probably exceed those of tiger shrimp.

In 2012, white shrimp exports accounted for 33% of the value of all shrimp exports from Vietnam, but by the third quarter of 2013, they accounted for 46.17% of the total value of shrimp exports and tiger shrimp accounted for 46.74%.
