Three Shrimp Companies Get Four Stars from GAA’s BAP Program

On August 6, 2014, Carson Roper, a representative of the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA), announced that three Vietnamese shrimp companies—Minh Phu Seafood Corporation, Ut Xi Aquatic Products Processing Joint Stock Company and Soc Trang Seafood Joint Stock Company (Stapimex)—received four-stars under GAA’s Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification program.  The four stars mean that their feed mills, farms, hatcheries and processing plants are all certified.

Only seven companies in the world have received four-star BAP certification.  Four of them are in Vietnam, including the three mentioned above, plus Thuan Phuoc Corporation; one in China, Zhanjiang Guolian Aquatic Products Group; and two in Thailand, Charoen Pokphand Foods Group and Thai Union Frozen Group.

Shrimp News: If you’re not familiar with the Global Aquaculture Alliance, I recommend that you watch the high-definition, five-minute video on its home page.  In it, the leaders of the Alliance—Wally Stephens, George Chamberlain, Lisa Goché and Peter Redmond—explain their mission and goals.
