Ca Mau Province Encourages Hatcheries

With 266,000 hectares of shrimp ponds at the southern tip of Vietnam, Ca Mau Province produces more farmed shrimp than any other province in Vietnam.  It requires 16-18 billion postlarvae a year to keep its ponds stocked, but it can only supply 40 percent of the demand.  The rest must be imported from other provinces and hatcheries in central Vietnam.

To cope with the situation, 14 shrimp farming cooperatives, inside and outside of the province, have met with 11 shrimp hatcheries and signed contracts for a consistent supply of shrimp seedstock.
