Using Bagasse in Shrimp Ponds

Tran Quang Hung (tranquanghungts@gmail.com) reports: Disease problems, especially EMS (early mortality syndrome), are increasing in the Mekong Delta.   Some farmers have added bagasse sugarcane powder to their ponds, and it has been relatively effective in reducing mortalities.

At the Vinh Trach Dong Commune in Bac Lieu Province, Mr. Vo Hong Ngoan, one of the first farmers to use sugarcane powder, said, “Good effect has been obtained for three shrimp-crops through support of local technicians.  By spreading bagasse sugarcane powder over the pond, 100% white leg shrimp farming showed to be successful last two shrimp-crops, also a tiger shrimp farm has been reassembly seen since current shrimp crop.”

Bagasse sugarcane powder provides iron, zinc and phosphorus to beneficial aquatic plants and to the shrimp.  It also stabilizes the pH, which reduces the farmers need to lime the pond during the first two months of growout, a big cost savings.  Its application causes no environmental problems.
