Shrimp Farming Industry Healthy and Growing

From 2004 to 2013, Venezuela’s aquaculture industry—including some fish species, but mostly shrimp—experienced growth of seven percent a year.  Yenry Urrea, Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, said, “Shrimp is...in full recovery to the point that we are projecting...22,000 tons by the end of 2013.  ...We...have obtained certification from the USA/FDA and the European Union.  We plan to expand exports to South Africa, Russia and Asia.”  He stressed that the increase in aquaculture production was due in part to the comprehensive support the Government provided to small-scale farmers.
