Shrimp Imports Up in January 2014

USA shrimp imports were up 4.1% in January 2014, compared to January 2013.  India was marginally ahead of Ecuador as the top supplier followed by Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam.  An 8.0 percent increase in shell-on imports fueled the increase.  USA imported 36.6 million pounds of shell-on product in January 2014, 2.7 million more pounds than in January 2013.  Ecuador was the chief shell-on supplier to the USA market followed by India, Indonesia and Mexico.

Imports of peeled shrimp were 40.5 million pounds, down 2.5 percent in January 2014, about a million pounds short of last year’s total.  Indonesia was the top supplier of peeled shrimp, followed by India, Ecuador and Vietnam.
