Indiana—Hoosier Shrimp Farm

Hoosier Shrimp Farm has 16 tanks that hold 5,000 gallons of water—and about 6,000 to 7,000 shrimp.  The water is run through several filters to take out unwanted bacteria, algae and viruses.  Only salt, baking soda, bacteria and lime are added to the tanks.  No chemicals or antibiotics are used.  It stocked its first two tanks on September 15, 2014, and opened its doors for fresh sales at the end of January 2015.  It’s open to the public on Fridays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.  Shrimp can also be purchased by appointment (phone 1-317-331-4027).  Its shrimp is also being sold at farm-to-table restaurants.

Hoosier Shrimp offers a number of tours, including 10-minute tours for individuals and group tours for schools and larger groups.  For groups larger than 10 people, the fee is $1 per person.
