Indiana—Correction on RDM Aquaculture Article

There were a couple of mistakes in the December 27, 2015, article on RDM Aquaculture (not to be confused with the December 29, 2015, critique of RDM by Forbes Adam).

The December 27, article said, “RDM produces 250,000 shrimp a month.”  That was a mistake.  According to Karlanea Brown, co-owner of RDM, she purchases 250,000 postlarvae a month and sells 85% of them to other shrimp farmers.  She keeps 14,000 to stock 3 of 7 tanks.  Her stocking density is 3,500 PLs for two 14-foot tanks and 7,000 PLs for one 18-foot tank.  If and when her PL customers develop their own nurseries, she cuts back on the 250,000 order.

RDM sells a shrimp farming system for $100,000.  The December 27 article said that solar panels were included with the system.  That was also a mistake.  Brown said, “We do not offer solar panels in our equipment list.  ...In the $100,000 we have a heat system priced at $4,700 for a micro boiler purchased at Home Depot.”
