Iowa—Sherlock Shrimp Academy

Scheduled for March 4 and 5, 2016, registration is now open for “Shrimping 101” at Sherlock Shrimp, an indoor shrimp farm in Ridgeway, Iowa.  This class is geared towards beginners and folks that are thinking about raising shrimp.  It consists of lectures, hands on experiences, and class discussions.  The goal is to give participants a knowledge base that will enable them to start raising Pacific white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei).  Class size is limited and it will fill up fast.  Participants must sign an accident waiver and provide a copy of their health insurance card.  Courses will also be available in April, September and November 2016.  Rooms are available at a special discounted rate at the Country Inn in Decorah, Iowa, about 15 miles from Sherlock Shrimp.  Tell Country Inn that Sherlock Shrimp sent you. Registration: http://www.sherlockshrimp.com

Sherlock Shrimp was launched by Sherill Ryan and her husband Jeff in a refurbished elementary school (that Jeff once attended) in Ridgeway, Iowa.  The indoor farm raises shrimp 365 days a year.  Sherlock Shrimp has 40 above ground pools.  The smallest pool holds 1,710 gallons of water, the largest 3,600 gallons.  In addition to the pools, a tiered system has been built in the school’s gym to improve shrimp production.  The baby shrimp go in the top tank and come down through the tiers as they mature.  The baby shrimp come from a shrimp hatchery in the Florida Keys.
