Hawaii—Pacific Mariculture Concepts, Joe Tabrah’s New Shrimp Farm

Pacific Mariculture Concepts, LLC, is negotiating with the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority to lease about three acres at the Hawaii Ocean Science Technology Park on the Big Island of Hawaii for a shrimp farm that will produce shrimp for local consumption.

Joe Tabrah, the former president of Shrimp Improvement Systems in Hawaii, is heading up Pacific Mariculture Concepts, which he formed as a new business in Hawaii in January 2015.  Tabrah has a long history in shrimp farming: Ecuador in the 1970s, the United States Marine Shrimp Farming Program at the Oceanic Institute in Hawaii in the 1990s and 2000s, and the job at Shrimp Improvement Systems.

Shrimp Improvement Systems, one of the world’s largest providers of disease-free and genetically improved shrimp broodstock, also locates its facilities at the Technology Park.
