Shrimp and Prawn Farmers Need Financing

Shrimp and prawn farmers in Myanmar are pleading for financial support to save their businesses, which are going downhill rapidly because of erratic power supplies and shortages of ice, cold storage facilities, transportation and laboratories.

Hatchery production of postlarvae has dropped from 300 million in 2012 to 30 million in 2013 and will probably drop to 20 million in 2014, mostly because of diseases.  The number of hatcheries has also fallen from about 20 in 2012 to 15 currently, and only four or five of them are operational.
