First Penaeus Vannamei Introduced into Kerala

The Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) has started the first Penaeus vannamei shrimp farming operations in the state of Kerala at the KUFOS’ Fisheries Station in Puthuveypu on the southwest coast of India.

The trial culture of P. vannamei is being launched after an expert committee, led by KUFOS Vice Chancellor Professor B. Madhusoodana Kurup, studied the scientific and technical sides of the project.  “Shrimp farmers in the State will be able to understand the ways and techniques of the farming practice of the species by visiting the shrimp farms at KUFOS station,” he said.

Inaugurating the farming venture, Minister for Fisheries K. Babu said that a model farming system for P. Vannamei, suitable for the particular brackish water ecosystem of the state, would be developed.
