Cracking Down on Illegal Shrimp Farms in the State of Tamil Nadu

On August 5, 2015, the Madras High Court of India instructed the Tamil Nadu Government to close down any shrimp farms in Villupuram District that do not have proper licenses.  “If no valid license is in existence, action has to be taken to stop the shrimp farming activity,” the Court ruled.  Upwards of 100 shrimp farms on approximately 3,500 acres have been operating illegally, causing environmental problems for the surrounding villages.  The ruling gives the government until October 30, 2015 to file a compliance report.

While 25 shrimp farmers did obtain licenses from the District Collector, those licenses were later invalidated during District Level Coastal Aquaculture Authority Committee Meetings, and have not been renewed.
