Zhanjiang Guolian Aquatic Product’s Profits Dive

Zhanjiang Guolian Aquatic Products, owner of one of China’s biggest shrimp farming operations (hatcheries, feed mills, farms, processing plants and international marketing), witnessed a huge drop in profitability during 2015.  According to the company’s January 29, 2016, performance report, from January to December 2015, net income attributable to shareholders dropped by 93 to 99%, compared to the same period in 2014, when the sale of a subsidiary inflated profits.

One factor that contributed to the huge drop in profitability: The strict examination of its shrimp exports by the USA/FDA.  The good news, in mid-February of 2015, Goulian regained “green card status” (no automatic USA Customs detention) for its exports to the United States.  It has also made a big investment in product development and its e-commerce platform, but there is still no return on this investment.
