Đồng Tháp Province Wants to Exclude Marine Shrimp
Farming in Freshwater Areas

The People’s Committee of Đồng Tháp Province wants to prevent marine shrimp farming in freshwater areas because the saltwater discharged by marine farms affects local water bodies and crops.

Đồng Tháp Province is the center of freshwater prawn farming in the Mekong Delta.

According to the Government’s master plan for fisheries development marine shrimp were not to be farmed in the province until 2020, but because marine shrimp farming is so profitable, a small industry has already established itself.

Châu Hồng Phúc, deputy chairman of the province People’s Committee, said his administration has instructed the Department of Natural Resources and Environment and other agencies to intensify checks and get tough on violations.
