United States

Louisiana—Dr. Greg Lutz, the Editor of the “New” Aquaculture Magazine

Those of you who followed fish and shellfish farming in the United States from the 1970s through the 2000s will have fond memories of Aquaculture Magazine, which, during those years, was the leading aquaculture magazine in the United States and well know around the world.

Aquaculture Magazine ceased publishing in late 2008 and was re-launched in February of 2014!  Greg Lutz, the new editor, a geneticist at Louisiana State University and contributor to The Shrimp List, says: “It had been struggling for several years, and although explanations vary as to why that was, ultimately the office was closed, the phones were disconnected and the former publisher and editor was nowhere to be found.  I was one of the columnists and a regular contributor at that time, and apart from the mention of a possible sale to new owners, none of us columnists ever received any explanation concerning what had happened or why.”

Then, in April 2010, Aquaculture Magazine was acquired by Design Publications International, Inc., a subsidiary of Design Publications, S.A. de C.V., which publishes Panorama Acuícola magazine, the leading aquaculture magazine in Mexicobut then several years passed without any other news.

Lutz continues, “In the summer of 2013, I was contacted by Salvador Meza [the editor of Panorama Acuicola] to discuss the possibility of serving as Editor-in-Chief of the new Aquaculture Magazine, and we quickly got things organized for a re-launch to coincide with the Aquaculture America Conference in February of 2014, in Seattle, Washington, USA.  Since then, we have been working hard to get the magazine back to where it was in its prior glory, and we seem to be making good progress.  We are interested in presenting content that is relevant to the North American industry, but with an international perspective.  ...And, we are always interested in ideas for articles and columns.”

Dr. Hui Gong (email is the shrimp columnist at the new Aquaculture Magazine and other people associated with shrimp farming will also write for the magazine, including Dallas Weaver (email, who does shrimp farming consulting and submits comments to the The Shrimp List, and Suzi Dominy (email, editor and publisher at, who frequently published news and reports on shrimp feeds.  The first two issues of the new Aquaculture Magazine contain articles on shrimp and crustacean farming.  Shrimp News will be posting excerpts from those articles to its website very soon.

Subscription Prices: Six issues a year: United States $25, Canada and Mexico $55 and outside North America $85.
