Postlarvae Shortage Causes Production to Drop

 

A shortage of postlarvae has caused a drop in production.  As the Europeans get ready for Christmas and New Year’s purchases and China stocks up for the Lunar New Year, the postlarvae shortage could lead to further drops in production—and increases in farm-gate prices.

 

At one time, the United States was the primary destination for Ecuador’s farm-raised shrimp.  For the last decade, however, it has been shipping more and more shrimp to China and the European Union, lowering the United States to number three on its list of importers.
