Guolian Targets Three Billion in Sales!

Zhanjiang Guolian Aquatic Products, a company with annual revenues of $397 million in 2016, wants to increase annual sales to $2.99 billion by 2019!

Guolian is planning to produce 5,000 metric tons of white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) from its farms in 2017, up from 1,000 tons in 2016.  Then, for 2018, the plan is for a 10,000-ton harvest—expanding to a 20,000-ton harvest in 2019/2020!

Located in Zhanjiang City, Guolian Aquatic has been in operation since 2001.  It’s committed to food safety and produces high-quality, sustainable shrimp products.  Its vertically integrated facilities are certified by the Global Aquaculture Alliance’s Best Aquaculture Products.  It has consolidated its shrimp farming operations around Zhanjiang City in Guangdong Province—the southern-most region of Mainland China, known as the country’s “shrimp capital”—and has grown quickly.

Currently, it’s building a 35-acre, indoor, recirculation shrimp farm and a new processing plant.

The firm is open to diversification, but shrimp will remain at its core business.  Shrimp sales will be driven by growth in the USA—where the firm has a shrimp import business, Sunnyvale Seafood, in Union City, California—and China, the world’s two largest shrimp markets.

The firm’s chairman Li Zhong, said, “In the past Guolian was an export-driven company.  Now it is turning towards the Chinese market.  I’m confident that over the next few years this production method will spread extensively in China.  Once one method is proven to work well in China, it proliferates very quickly.”  He thinks recirculating shrimp farms will be springing up all over China—especially near population centers—to supply markets with live shrimp year round.  This could happen within just a few years, he said.

In five years, he expects the firm to harvest 30,000 tons annually from recirculating shrimp farms, but if all goes according to plan, up to 50,000 tons, he said!

Guolian has set a completion deadline for its new 35,000-to-50,000-ton-capacity processing facility of June 2018.  The site will employ around 1,500 workers during construction.  The new processing plant will process a variety of seafood, but mostly shrimp.  It will also house a large facility for making packaged foods and ready-to-eat meals.
