Monument to the Hairy Crab

Shrimp News: Hairy crab farming has become a huge business in China, especially in Jiangsu Province.  I say “huge” because I don’t think anyone knows how big the industry really is!  Estimates range from tens to hundreds of millions of dollars?

One clue to the “hugeness” of the industry is the crab-shaped, eco-museum under construction on the shores of Yangcheng Lake in Jiangsu Province.  The stainless steel crab is 75 meters long and 16 meters high with three floors under its carapace.  Still under construction, it hopes to open its doors in the second half of 2018.

Another common name for hairy crabs is “Chinese Mitten Crabs”.  The scientific name is Eriocheir sinensis.
